DC Main Streets

Funded by the DC Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD), DC Main Streets is a comprehensive program that promotes the revitalization of traditional business corridors in the District of Columbia. Main Streets serve as the citywide coordinating program that provides services and funding to support the traditional retail districts in the city. These independent, nonprofit, neighborhood-based Main Street programs revitalize communities by retaining and recruiting businesses, improving commercial properties and streetscapes, and attracting consumers. Leaders in these neighborhood-based organizations assist businesses and coordinate sustainable community-driven revitalization efforts in their neighborhoods. As a result of the DC Main Streets program, the District has seen the retention of existing businesses, an increase in new businesses and the creation of new jobs. In addition, facade improvements and building rehabilitation projects have upgraded the image of local commercial corridors, while marketing and branding efforts have resulted in additional exposure and increased market share.

More about Uptown Main Street

In addition to Main Street funding provided by DSLBD, Upper 14th street will receive the benefits of Uptown Main Street’s new full-time Executive Director, Jordan Haferbier. Jordan joined the Uptown Main Street organization in February and has more than five years of non-profit experience.  Previously, Jordan worked to support stakeholder engagement and executive communications at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the founder of the Main Street Approach.  She’s excited to work with the many engaged community partners along this corridor to support our businesses.

Uptown Main Street is governed by an eight-person board comprised of residents, business owners and commercial property owners.  The board meets monthly to move UMS’ strategic vision forward.  In keeping with the National Main Street Center model, UMS has four committees staffed by volunteers to support individual projects and efforts.  Interested volunteers are encouraged to email jordan@uptownmainstreet.org to learn more about our Economic Vitality, Design, Organization, and Promotion Committees.
